Feeding Program
Concerning Feeding Boerboels…
Well, we feed our boerboels a number of different things. We don’t expect you to be able to necessarily do the same, and the nice thing about their digestive systems is - they seem to be quite veratile. We speak only from what the boerboels have shown us over the past few years, in raising boerboels them, what works and what doesn’t.
I haven’t written anything up until now because there’s so many opinions on the subject of feeding programs and so many different things to feed them. I have experimented with my boerboels and can tell you this.
Okay, I say you can feed them a number of things. When I first got Bella, I bought soome local regular large breed puppy food and cleaned out our freezer of leftover hunting meet from the past few years - deer, bear, moose and such. I chopped it up and chopped up all kinds of veggies and garlic, glucosamine, vitamine c and stuff like that, re-froze it and fed it frozen and raw. She loved it and did well. She also did well on the regular puppy food.
When I got Duke and Sophia, I tried a cheap food that was mainly meat product and corn. Well, they grew up fine.
We also have been giving them alot of raw frozen beef, and raw frozen deer, as you can see on some of my pictures. Sometimes my dog run looks like a boneyard, oh well. Dogs like bones and meat. They do have their disagreements over who’s bone is who’s, but they sort it out, and sometimes I have to throw a few staples in their.
We do contain our dogs here, and we also let them spend alot of time together. We like to keep them used to being together as opposed to always isolated by fences and kennels. It seems to be good for them, in learnig how to co-habitate and stuff like that.
When we have a litter of puppies, I usually let Mama feed them until it seems she’s done, and they need more. That tends to vary, but seems to between weeks 4 and 5, and then I start weening them off mama to help her dry up, that tends to vary as well.
Anyways, I feed them a high quality puppy food until they go to their new homes, and I’ve experimented with that process as well. I’ve tried the lower quality foo to the higher quality food, I find feeidng them the higher quality is better.
Well, I’ll add more to this when I can - thanks and I hope this helps, my intention is not to start up opinionated discussion, this is only to let you know what we are doing here, and what seems to be working for us. I like to keep an open mind about these things and keep open to what works for you.
Remember, I see these dogs as having an overall healthy and strong digestive system. They will always be some who may need more serious attention to their diet, I just try not to stress about, and see what works.
